For the last five years, REDTAIl Telematics has researched driver perceptions of telematics data usage. The data has informed both our fleet management and usage-based insurance (UBI) strategy and plan. Our last two surveys (9/23 and 10/24) show a major change in one area.We asked ‘Would impact on the environment through reduced emissions help you agree to share driving data?
+75% positives across the entire period.
The data shows immiedate savings and a marked uplift on longer journeys. There are five main driving techniques suggested :
- Drive smoothly – anticipate, avoid harsh braking and acceleration
- Lift off the accelerator – downhill or decelerating stay in gear but raise right foot
- Shift up early – maintain a lower RPM
- Don’t speed – speed doubles, air resistance quadruples
- Avoid idling – emissions way higher than re-start
Our real world example is with a North Carolina based construction company with a fleet of just under 100 vehicles. The results:

REDTAIL Telematics continues to evangelise.Fleet owners and managers, UBI Propositions teams and OEM Connected Vehicle innovators need to engage. There is an unprecedented opportunity to do differently, and ultimately, to make a difference.
